Paul Wright is a British Decorative Artist specialising in Trompe l'Oeil murals, faux effects and furniture.
He was born near Liverpool where he lived during the "Swinging Sixties" Beatles era.
Following a period of study at the Southport College of Art, Paul's first job was as a designer with a shop window display company. In 1963 however, at the height of the "Mersey Beat" era and as "Beatle-Mania" was about to sweep the world Paul became involved in painting murals in many of the new clubs that were springing up all over the city of Liverpool.
When the Beatles left the city, demand for Paul's work by the clubs diminished and he went to work as a scenic designer for Liverpool Playhouse Theatre and over the next sixteen years worked all over England for various, prestigious theatres and in 1982 won the London West End Scenic Art award for "The Aspen Papers" starring Vanessa Redgrave and Christopher Reeve. Paul progressed into television and was responsible for the scenic design on the science fiction series "Dr.Who", as well as working in films for British television.
During this period he also worked on many TV commercials and his experience in theatre, television and film led to him working on a multi-million pound ice-ballet spectacular based on Tchaikowski's "Sleeping Beauty".
In 1982, Paul started his own Decorative Art Studio in the county of Surrey outside London where he specialised in interiors for private residences, hotels, offices, clubs etc. At the same time he developed his Trompe l'Oeil work applying the technique not only to murals but also to furniture. The business took off immediately and before long, Paul was exporting his furniture to the US , Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, Hong Kong and many other countries.
Paul's work attracted the attention of important clients such as Mohamed Al Fayed (owner of Harrods department store in Knightsbridge, London), Mike Rutherford (lead guitarist of the rock band "Genesis", Phil Collins (ex-"Genesis"), the Sutton Place Arts Foundation (at one time the home of Paul Getty), His Royal Highness the Sultan of Brunei, Ratners Jewellers and Garrards Crown Jewellers. He also designed and painted many exhibition stands including for the World Wildlife Fund.
In 1991 Paul moved to northern Italy where he continues to work from his studio/gallery-base, travelling all over Europe and to the US. Paul's work has been featured in many periodicals notably Architectural Digest and has been shown on Italian television.
